People remember a gift, but they remember a good thank-you even longer. You don’t need to be a great writer: call the person by name, say what they gave you and share what it means to you. Here’s when to say thank you, how to make it personal and sample messages you can adapt, sorted by occasion and by channel.
Why and when to say thank you
A thank-you lets the giver know their gift arrived—which matters when gifts are sent from a phone or from another city—and that the gesture meant something. It applies to everyone: whoever gave a lot, a little, as part of a group or from far away.
On timing:
- As soon as you can. A quick message in the first few days beats a perfect card months later.
- Weddings get a longer window, because there are so many gifts. Emily Post, the classic American etiquette authority, says all notes should be written within three months of receiving the gift or of the wedding date, and points out that couples do not get “a year’s grace period” (Emily Post, August 8, 2024, checked in September 2026).
- Better late than never. If you missed the moment, say thanks anyway, without a long apology.
A practical tip: write down each gift and who gave it as soon as it arrives. Nobody remembers everything after the party.
How to make a thank-you message personal
A five-step formula:
- Use their name. “Hi, Rosa” already beats “Hi, everyone.”
- Name the gift. “The coffee maker,” not “your lovely gift.”
- Say how you’ll use it: where it lives, when you first used it or what plan it helps you reach. The same Emily Post guidance recommends doing this for cash gifts too.
- Add something about them: their company, their trip, their help with the preparations.
- Close warmly, and if it fits, say you’d love to see them soon.
There’s no need to mention the amount of a cash gift. “Your contribution” or “your generous gift” is enough.
Short thank-you notes for a special gift
- “Thank you for thinking of me so kindly. I love your gift, and I’ll think of you every time I use it.”
- “You didn’t have to, but I’m so glad you did. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
- “You know me way too well: it’s exactly what I wanted. Thanks for the gift and for always being there.”
Wedding gift thank-you messages
Dear Rosa, thank you for the dinnerware. We used it for our first family dinner in the new apartment, and everyone asked where it came from. Most of all, thank you for celebrating with us and dancing until the very end. Love, Lucía and Gabriel.
Uncle Julio and Aunt Pili, thank you for traveling all the way from Trujillo to be with us, and for the sheet set, which is already in use. Having you at the ceremony meant so much. We hope to see you at our place soon.
For a cash gift or contribution
Hi, Marco! Thank you for your contribution to our honeymoon. It’s covering the boat tour we had our hearts set on, and we’ll send you a photo from out on the water. Thanks for being part of it!
Dear godparents, your contribution brings us closer to the down payment on our first apartment. Once we have the keys, you’ll be among our first guests.

For a group gift
Name every person, not just the group. If you can, post in the group chat and also message each person individually.
To my high school crew: thank you for going in together on the washing machine! It’s already done its first load, and we thought of you. Ana, Kathy, Mili and Vane, you’re the best.
Dear team, thank you for the stroller. You picked the perfect one, and we’ve already taken it out for a walk. Thanks to each of you for organizing it and for all the sweet notes.
For a birthday gift
Thanks for the headphones, Pedro! I wear them every time I run and never take them off. And thank you for coming to celebrate. The night wouldn’t have been the same without you.
Mom, thank you for the book and the lovely inscription. I’m going to take my time with it. Love you.
To everyone who sent a message or a gift: thank you for making my 40th a day I’ll never forget. I’m replying to each of you one by one.

For a baby shower gift
Dear Lucía, thank you for the baby carrier. We’ve tried it at home, and Mateo falls asleep the moment we pick him up in it. Thank you for being part of this wait with us.
Thank you all for the baby shower and for so much love for our daughter. Every gift already has its spot in her room, and once she arrives, we’ll introduce you to its owner.

For a housewarming gift
Carla and Luis, thank you for the plant. It’s in the living room by the window, and it’s already put out a new leaf. Thanks for coming to our open house. Come back any time.
Thank you for the blender! We’re learning to cook in our new kitchen, and we use it every morning for juice.

For a quinceañera gift
A quinceañera is the 15th-birthday celebration many Latin American families throw, so these are written in the birthday girl’s voice.
Aunt Rosa, thank you for the earrings. I wore them to the party, and I’m keeping them forever. Thank you also for helping me get ready. I was so nervous!
Dear godparents, thank you for the contribution to my quinceañera trip. I still can’t believe it, and I promise to tell you everything when I’m back.
If you’re in the middle of planning, see how to plan a quinceañera and parati for quinceañeras. One detail that tends to be left until the end and is better settled early: deciding which songs to pick for the quinceañera waltz, since the DJ almost always has to trim them down to something danceable.
By channel: WhatsApp, card or social media
On WhatsApp
It’s the fastest option and the one most people use. Message each person separately and, if you can, add a photo of the gift in use or a short voice note.
Hi, Martín! Here’s a photo of the coffee maker on its first Sunday on the job. Thank you for the gift and for coming!
In a handwritten card
Traditional etiquette guides like Emily Post’s prefer a handwritten note and rule out texts for wedding gift thank-yous. A good middle ground: a personal WhatsApp message as soon as the gift arrives, and a card for the people closest to you.
Dear Grandma and Grandpa, thank you for the embroidered tablecloth. We’ll bring it out every Christmas, and every time we’ll tell everyone who gave it to us. With all our love, Lucía and Gabriel.
In a social media post
A post thanks everyone at once, but it doesn’t replace a personal message. Never show amounts or compare gifts.
Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us on Saturday, in person and from afar. We’re reading every message and will reply to each of you. We’re so lucky to have you!
Thank-you mistakes to avoid
- Copying the same message for everyone. People can tell.
- Mentioning amounts or comparing gifts, even as a joke.
- Thanking only the biggest givers.
- Mixing up who gave what. That’s what the list is for.
- Forgetting group gifts or guests who gave from far away.
- Letting months go by without a word.
Questions that come up while you write
What do we write when we don’t know who left the envelope?
Ask whoever looked after the card box and the people sitting at that table first—somebody usually saw. If nothing turns up, don’t guess: a “thank you for your envelope” sent to the wrong person is worse than silence. Send one message to everyone instead, with no mention of envelopes or amounts, thanking them for being there. And note it for next time: asking for a name on every envelope is the only thing that prevents this.
Do we thank guests who didn’t give anything?
Yes, and it’s the easiest message to write because it never mentions gifts. Thank them for coming, name something you remember from the night and say you’d love to see them soon. A thank-you list isn’t a list of who gave: build it that way and people notice, starting with the ones who made the effort to be there without being able to spend.
How do you thank someone for a duplicate, or for a gift that arrived damaged?
By thanking the gesture and stopping there. For a duplicate, say why having two suits you—one at home, one at the office, one in reserve—not that you already had it. For something damaged, say nothing at all, unless the giver can easily swap it and you’d rather tell them in person. Never in the thank-you message itself.
Isn’t thanking people at the party enough?
The hug that night counts, but it isn’t the thank-you. When they handed the gift over you were greeting a hundred people, and they know it. The message that gets remembered is the one from the days after, once you can name the gift and say what you did with it. Doing both is ideal; doing only the first is what later reads as forgetting.
Thank everyone with parati
With parati, the invitation and the gift registry live on one link that you share on WhatsApp, whether it’s for your wedding or any other celebration.
- Guests RSVP and give gifts from their phone, without creating an account, paying by card or Yape (a mobile wallet widely used in Peru).
- You see who confirmed and who gave what, so your thank-you list is already done.
- Gifts can be split into parts so several guests can share one, and El Sueño (The Dream) is a big gift with the goal and the minimum contribution you set.
